Honey Harvest
Our first year of urban beekeeping has been exciting and incredibly educational. We paired up with Elise Watson of Apiaries and Bees for Communities and she has been managing our 2 colonies all summer long. As you know it has been an unusual summer and the bees have reflected that too. Everything has been a little later than usual and a little less productive but we now have some amazing honey to share to show for it. Starting Monday we will have small jars of honeycomb available in Forage. Some of the honey is subtle and floral from the clover season and some of it has hints of cinnamon and cardamom. If just depends on the time of the year that the bees made it. The comb is completely unaltered and is exactly the way the bees made it. It can be eaten beeswax and all but if you prefer you can gently crush the comb through a fine sieve to extract the liquid honey. This honey represents our neighborhood (the hives are just 7 blocks from Forage) and this really is a unique opportunity to taste the city. We’re going to continue to keep bees next year and we hope to give Forage customers an opportunity to come out and see the hives and find out more. In the mean time enjoy the sweet success we’ve had this year!
