forage weekly specials – march 21st

LOCAL 101 and LOCAL 201

Two years ago, inspired by Terra Madre, we started an annual gathering of the local food scene called LOCAL 101.  It was a one day event of talks by various farmers, growers, and activists with the purpose of bringing everyone together to celebrate and learn more about local agriculture.  Except for some generous support from Slow Food Calgary and Alberta Agriculture, it was an event that we created, promoted, ran, and paid for ourselves.  It was a lot to take on and we weren’t planning on doing the event this year and that’s when Slow Food Calgary stepped in.  They have taken the spirit of the event and expanded it over a whole weekend.  There are speakers, film viewings, food events, panel discussions, and round tables all planned for the last weekend in April and we couldn’t be more thrilled with seeing the event grow and continue!  You are going to want to be a part of this very special weekend and tickets are on sale now.  For more information, check out LOCAL 101/201 on the Slow Food Calgary website.

On the Menu

It seems like March is the month celebrations with the opportunity to eat specific dishes.  We had gumbo at Mardi Gras and lamb shepherd’s pie at St. Patrick’s Day and now we can celebrate the first day of spring with Iranian New Years.  We are making an Iranian Bison Stew and it’s so good it’s one that we’ve offered before.  The recipe and technique was handed down by a friend who was taught by her Iranian mother-in-law.  It is simple but the flavours are complex and comforting.  It’s a must try if you haven’t had it yet.

This week we also have Angel Food Cake with Berries (from Pearson’s Berry Farm) on the menu.  We’ll be making Lemon Curd with all the leftover egg yolks and if you would like a whole Angel Food Cake we’ll be offering them for $15.  We just ask that you give us a call and preorder them so we can make sure we make enough.  They freeze great and just seem like a spring time dessert!
